Despite entering the slower summer season, airfreight rates on key routes from Asia remain surprisingly strong. The strength of the market can be attributed to continuing robust activity in e-commerce driven by big players like Temu and Shein as well as rising ocean shipping rates caused by continued disruption to ocean shipping.
With rates being higher, on average, year on year, the outlook for air cargo is looking somewhat optimistic. While it is still early, sources are reporting that a lot of block space agreement capacity for Thanksgiving and Christmas has already been signed for, which could signal a big spike in spot rates later in the year.
It is also important to note that with the U.S. election happening later this year, potential tariff additions could impact trade.
